An UnHegelian Thought

The things you do when no one else is around- that's the person you are.

  1. This is a great quote. It makes way more sense to me than Hegel's theory because I don't think you need people to recognize your existence. I think sometimes you exist more when you are alone because you can express yourself without worrying about what others might think. And what you do with your own free will is what defines you...at least that's how I see it.

  2. I think there's a happy medium somewhere. I completely disagreed with Hegel's theory of mutual recognition at first. I often feel more myself when I am completely alone, because I don't need to compromise or change myself in any way to communicate with others. At the same time, I want to be recognized by others. I want others to read what I write, and listen to what I say. I don't want to feel as though I have no effect on the world and people around me.

A good thing about this quote is that it challenges you to evaluate how you use your free time. I wouldn't like my identity to be summed up as "Person who mindlessly surfs the web."
